CALDWELL, Ohio, October 27, 2007 - For a fighter that has spent most of his career on the road, a bout in his hometown is a preferred showcase, but it can bring with it many pressures and new challenges. Along with training distractions, knowing the crowd is filled with friends and family can make many fighters fight out of character and put themselves in harms way when there is no need to.
This Saturday October 27, at the Caldwell Events Center, undefeated prospect Mario Hernandez fought in his hometown of Caldwell, Idaho for the first time in his career. Any worries of a disastrous return home were quickly dispelled as Hernandez scored an eight round lopsided unanimous decision victory over tough Mexican veteran Jorge Alberto Reyes.
The young fighter from Caldwell displayed the quick reflexes and solid boxing ability that have many in the Southern Idaho boxing scene excited about his future. Hernandez (9-0 3KO's) quickly asserted control over the fight in the first round, snapping swift jabs out of a southpaw stance and following up with crisp combination punching. The quick tempo of the fight seemed to catch Reyes (21-26-3 17KO's) by surprise. A straight left also caught him by surprise as it landed flush on his head, knocking him down for a mandatory eight count. Reyes beat the count and did not appear hurt; a point Hernandez also seemed to notice as he went back to working behind the jab rather than go after the KO.
