SYLMAR, Calif. - We've all heard about bringing an apple to school for a teacher, but boxing gloves?

Fourth grade teacher, Daniel Hernandez of Hubbard Street Elementary wrote in glowing terms of a visit by professional boxer Miguel Espino, who who visited his school. He had the following to say:

"On Friday, November 9, 2007, Miguel Espino was invited to be a guest speaker at Hubbard St. Elementary. I am a fourth grade teacher at the school and spoke to the fourth grade faculty about having Miguel speak to our classes as part of our unit opener entitled "Dreams to Jobs".

"I could not think of a better person to come in and talk to our students about turning their dreams into a reality. Miguel came Friday morning from 9:00-10:30 and spoke to three groups of 50 fourth grade students which ranged in age from 9-10 years old. He was well prepared as he talked to all three groups about his dreams of becoming a professional boxer. He expressed all of the dedication and hard work it takes to reach any dream and emphasized the importance of education. He answered all of the students' questions and left such a great impression that some students asked for autographs. He kept students and faculty intrigued as he shared his stories, passed around his boxing belt, and showed his boxing robe.

"Students were excited when they heard that a professional boxer was going to speak to them and they have been asking me about him this whole week. He truly made a positive impact on the students by reiterating that it does not matter where you come from or who you are, but with hard work and an education, anyone can reach their dream.

"My colleagues and myself were very happy with Miguel's presentation and hope to have him back in the future."

Hubbard St. Elementary is located at 13325 HUBBARD ST. SYLMAR, CA 91342. (818)367-1944. Principal: Mrs. Suellen Helm-Torres. I am Daniel Hernandez, 4th grade teacher.
