Mass Locals Eklund, Beauchamp Save Show With Solid Performances
By J.D. Vena at ringside

BOSTON, MA – When two opponents pulled out of their scheduled bouts last night at Rich Cappiello's ‘Holiday Havoc’ card at the Roxy, that meant that one of the bouts would have to be extended two more rounds. The Massachusetts State Boxing Commission requires that a boxing event within the state must have a minimum of 24 scheduled rounds of boxing. All seven of last night’s bouts, with the exception of one were scheduled for 4 rounds, but with only 5 bouts, only 22 rounds were scheduled.

Fortunately, Lowell’s Sean Eklund, a protégé and nephew of the famed “Irish” Micky Ward as well as Lynn’s Isander Beauchamp, a long-time New England amateur standout from the Rivera Brothers Boxing Club, were eager to round out the show allowing their separate bouts to be extended to a six round distance. And in the process, both local favorites put forth the best performances of their careers last night in front of an entertained crowd.
Eklund, 140 ½, won his 4th straight bout and his first inside the distance when he methodically wore down “Soldier” Scorn Hatcher, 132 ¼, of Akron, OH, stopping him at 2:13 of the 5th round. Eklund pressed forward with a double jab and appeared more and more comfortable and effective as the fight progressed and his opponent tired, mixing his attack with an overhand right and a decent body assualt. Referee Javier Colon appropriately stopped what was turning into a completely one-sided bout when the punches appeared to be hurting Hatcher during the 5th round.

The aforementioned Beauchamp, 112, didn’t look like a preliminary boxer last night when he won a comfortable and hard-fought unanimous 6 round decision in a rematch against Edwin Carmona, 112, of Worcester. In fact, Beauchamp looked like a potential contender in the way he beautifully countered and mixed his combinations against the game Carmona. All three judges awarded Beauchamp with three tallies of 59-55. Beauchamp is now 3-0 and I’m sure those who were witnessing his skills for the first time will be eagerly awaiting his next bout not matter how many rounds are scheduled.

In other bouts, Simeon Dunwell, another promising boxer from the city of Lynn didn’t appear to fight all that well, though it may have had to do with his inactivity. Dunwell has had only one bout since December of last year but at least he will have added more rounds to his ledger. Dunwell, 141, defeated Jason Jordan, 139, a veteran of 22 bouts over six rounds by scores of 59-55 (twice) and 60-54. The win upped his ledger to 6-0 with 2 KO’s. Juan Lopez, 133 ¼, of Lynn won his professional debut with a well-fought unanimous decision (40-36 twice and 40-35) victory over Edwin Rosado, 132 ¾. In the final bout hardpunching cruiserweight Richard Gingras, 188, of Claremont, NH extended his record to 7-0 with 4 KO’s when he won a unanimous decision over Worcester’s John Rainwater, 207 ¾ with three scores of 40-36.
