Big Weekend in Idaho--Iran Barkley & Saul Mamby Return to the Ring!
Favio Medina takes on Santos Pakau, as CBZ Heavyweight Chauncey Welliver promotes his first show

By Ricardo Ibarra

The northwest fight scene is quickly picking up steam with fight cards scheduled to go on back-to-back throughout the region in the next couple of weeks. Next weekend will be especially busy in the state of Idaho with two cards lined up with some very interesting match-ups and one the region’s favorite fighters making the transition from fighter to promoter.

First up on Thursday, February 21st at the Couer D’Alene Casino in Worley, Idaho, Moe Smith kicks off 2008 with his first show of the new season. The card is headlined by local welterweight prospect Favio Medina (16-1-2 7KOs) taking on Santos Pakau (27-5-1 10KOs) in a ten round bout. Medina had a progressive 2007, fighting four times, winning them all. The fan favorite has a tough task in front of him as he is fighting an opponent with an edge in experience. Pakau, a native of New Zealand, has been in the ring with some of the game’s best such as Paul Williams, Randal Bailey, and Antonio Mesquita. The bout promises to deliver fireworks for however long it lasts.

The under card is highlighted by the continuing comeback of Canadian middleweight prospect Mark Woolnough (16-5-1 5KO’s). After taking a two year hiatus, Woolnough is determined to stay busy as he looks to add his third straight victory in four months. He takes on the awkward Manny Castillo in a four round super middleweight bout. Local heavyweight hopeful Skyler Anderson is scheduled to fight a six round bout against Roosevelt Parker, four bouts featuring local talent round out the remainder of the card. Tickets can be purchased at the Couer D’Alene Casino Box office or at http://ticketswest.rdln.com/

Saturday, February 23rd at the Pi-Nee-Waus Community Center in Lapwai, Idaho, Chauncey “The Hillyard Hammer” Welliver kicks off his career as a boxing promoter with a nine bout, pro-am card. The affable heavyweight from Spokane, WA has been a fan favorite in the region for some time. His first foray into the business side of boxing will feature three professional fights with six amateur bouts making up the under card.

In the main event, Iran “The blade” Barkley steps back into the ring after eight years of inactivity. The former world champion, and twice conqueror of Tommy Hearns, will fight in a ten round heavyweight bout against an opponent yet to be determined. The semi-main event features another former world champion making a return to the sport as Saoul Mamby, once ruler of the Jr. Welterweight division, takes on Frank Bybee in a ten round bout.

Tickets to the event are modestly priced at $10 for general admission and $20 for ringside and can be purchased at the door or by calling 509-218-9881. Lapwai, Idaho is located fifteen miles East of Lewiston, Idaho, just across the Washington State border. The show is scheduled to begin at 7pm, with the doors opening at 6pm.
