NEW YORK--Undefeated junior middleweight boxer James Moore, a native of County Wicklow, Ireland, who fights out of Queens, New York, was honored as a “Future Champion” by the Veteran Boxers Association, Ring 8, at their monthly meeting at the Waterfront Crab House in Long Island City, Queens, on February 19th.

Moore , pictured with his wife Leanne, is a veteran of 340 amateur bouts and the longtime captain of the Irish national amateur team. On March 15th he will headline “A Fistful of Shamrocks,” the third installment of the annual pre-St. Patrick’s Day boxing show at Madison Square Garden. Moore will put his 14-0 (10 knockouts) record on the line against seasoned veteran J.C. Candelo, 27-9 (18 knockouts) of Colombia in the 10 round main event. The show is being promoted by Celtic Gloves Promotions.

During his acceptance speech, Moore, who turned 30 on February 26, proved that he is as quick with a quip as he is with his thunderous left hook to the body. “Like most boxers, I’d much rather have an opponent in front of me than a microphone,” he joked to the more than 100 people in attendance.

“James is a fine young man and a real credit to the boxing game,” said Henry Wallitsch, a former heavyweight who is now the president of the venerable Ring 8, which has been helping indigent boxers since the 1950s. “He’s a real throwback fighter. He has loads of talent and a real fighting heart, which should win him a world title as soon as he gets the opportunity to fight for one.”

Other Irish favorites scheduled to fight on March 15th are lightweight Oisin Fagan, 20-5 (15 knockouts), a Dublin native who fights out of Oklahoma City ; junior middleweight Henry “Western Warrior” Coyle, 5-1 (5 knockouts) of Chicago by way of County Mayo ; and middleweight Simon “Slick Fighting Irish” O’Donnell, 5-1 (2 knockouts) of County Galway . In addition to the fights, live Irish music will be performed by the band “Big Girl’s Blouse.”

Tickets, which range from $400 to $50, can be purchased through Ticketmaster, 866-448-7849 , or by calling Celtic Gloves at 917-559-8467 or Gleason’s Gym at 718-797-2872 .
