If The Russians are Coming . . . There Will Be Blood

Salita, gezunt vi a ferd, nevertheless had not fought in eleven months, and he needed to answer questions about his timing. Before settling in for the fights, I fressed a bit at the kosher food court -- there is nothing more fulfilling than a spinach knish served by a beautiful Latina with a spectacular tattoo. (The co-feature and preliminary bouts are reported below.) Salita’s foe, late-sub Fabian “El Lobo” Luque, came into the bout 21-6-4 and seemed a little nonplussed at the rabid reaction given to the fighters by the pro-Salita crowd, which included 1994 Olympic Gold Medal winner Oksana Baiul. Lobo, at 145, looked oysgeposhet.
Two minutes into the first, oy! Salita landed such a klop that Lobo crumpled to his toochess. Lobo struggled through the round and made it unsteadily to his corner at the bell.
From that point on, Salita was determined to stop his opponent. A few times, Salita seemed overanxious; once Salita tried to get inside he squared his feet and wound up hitting Lobo low. When he did it a second time a round later, the referee took away a point.
Finally, in the fifth, the ringside doctor did Lobo a mitzvah by climbing the stairs to the ring shouting shoyn genug! to the referee, who stopped the fight. Lobo kvetched a little, but just a little.
I was rusty, but after the knockdown, I settled down,” commented Salita. “It felt good to be back.” He then got to pose with Oksana at mid-ring.

On the undercard, cruiserweight Jon Schneider ran into a beanpole named Tyrone Smith, a Boston cop who moonlights as a prizefighter. Smith is very tall, technically sound, and tough. Schenider was having his way until a cut on the top of his head seemed to throw his rhythm off. In the next round, one of Smith’s punches opened a nasty gsh over Schneider’s eye, yet he managed to stagger Smith and almost drop him with a long left. Smith had a big sixth round and was able to salvage a draw. This writer had it a draw as well.
Three-time NYC Golden Gloves Champion Eileen "Hawaiian Mongoose" Olszewski (5-0-1) scored a majority decision over Elena "Baby Doll" Reid (19-4-5, 5 KOs) to win the WIBA women's flyweight championship. The Mongoose outfought Reid every step of the way and the bout could have been stopped after the 8th round. Incredibly, Luis Rivera called it even while the other two judges justly made Olszewski the new champ.
Dimitri Kirilov 113˝ drew after twelve entertaining rounds with Cecilio Santos of Mexico. These two fighters fought old school and Santos had to go all Basilio on him to avoid getting overwhelmed. Each round had its interesting moments and a draw was a fair verdict.
In the co-feature-cum-walkout bout, Jorge "The Truth" Teron (20-0-1, 12 KOs) defeated Sandro Marcos (27-17-2, 23 KOs) of Mazatlan, Mexico via fifth-round tko to take the vacant WBO Intercontinental lightweight championship.
