GARY, Ind., April 19, 2008—Girlfriend, those Indiana fans sure love their boxing! And Gary, Indiana’s NABC Super Lightweight Champion “Merciless” Mary McGee (135 ¾ lbs., 13-0, 7 KO’s) gave the fans at the Majestic Star Casino and hotel something to cheer about.

Wasting little time, McGee showed no mercy as she dispatched St. Louis, Missouri’s Renee Richardt-Douglas (134 lbs., 11-5-1, 5 KO’s ) little over a minute into the first round.

“Don’t give her any room to box!” shouted Douglas’ corner. Heeding their instructions, Douglas put her head into McGee’s chest and backed her into a corner behind wide winging blows.

“Up the middle! Throw punches up the middle,” shouted Douglas’ corner.

Too late.

McGee gained that punching room and, unleashing a series of two-fisted assaults, she drove Douglas across the ring to the opposite corner, then trapped her in another. Battering away, she jarred Douglas with a stunning right to the head.

Cringing, Douglas appeared helpless and in distress.

Douglas’s corner threw in the towel and, after asking Douglas if she wanted to go on, referee Blake Allen waved off the bout, stopping it at 1:22 into the first round.

“[McGee] was just catching her with some really good clean shots—she had really good accuracy with the shots,” referee Allen said. “She injured her neck during the bout. Her corner recommended stopping the bout, so I stopped it.”

Ochoa (right) drives Walker into the ropes with a heavy right to the head

In a similar rout, Hobart, Indiana’s undefeated Ed Ochoa (148 lbs., 3-0, 3 KO’s) blew out Anderson, Indiana’s Patrick Walker (145 lbs., pro debut) in the first round.

Boring in behind flailing fists, Walker walked into the first punch Ochoa threw—a straight right—and dropped on his haunches. Rising, Walker charged winging fists with malevolent intent. Tying up, he got caught moments later by Ochoa with a flurry.

Walker rose again at nine and was staggered and dumped into the ropes with another flourish. Referee Kurt Spivey wisely halted the bout at 1:14 into the fist round, granting Ochoa a technical knockout victory.

Perez (right) lands a right ot Gaddy's head

Hammond, Indiana’s Jimmy Perez, Jr. (176 ½ lbs., 2-1, 1 KO) and Osceola, Indiana’s Harold “The White Bull” Gaddy (173 lbs., pro debut) had the audience yelling and cheering throughout in a classic pier-six style brawl, with the more experienced Perez pulling it out in the end.

Perez overcame a rough and tumble first round and began imposing his superior boxing skills in the latter half of the second round, landing the sharper combinations.

The third was back and forth mauling and slugging. Perez tired in the mid-third of the round as Gaddy appeared to be wearing him out. However, he gained an edge in the latter third of the round behind sharp clubbing lefts and rights.

The fourth round was a lot of give and take. At rounds end, Perez appeared to stun Gaddy with lefts and rights and poured it on until the bell gonged.

Judges scored the bout 36-40, 37-39, and 36-40 all in favor of Perez, who garnered a unanimous decision win.

In a dominating but competitive bout, Merrillville, Indiana’s light heavyweight Frantoine “The Tiger” Greenwood (168 lbs., 1-0) won a unanimous decision over Michoacan, Mexico’s Alonso Perdomo (162 ½ lbs., pro debut).

Fireworks erupted at the end of the third round as Greenwood nailed Perdomo in a corner. Unloading, he tried putting him away with a flourish. however, Perdomo fought his way clear as the two traded furious blows.

In the fourth, Greenwood almost ended matters, dropping Perdomo with a right hook to the head and a barrage of punches the second time. Rising at the nine count, Perdomo fought back enough to stave off the finishing touches of Greenwood.

Judges scored the bout 40-34 all for Greenwood, giving him a well-earned unanimous decision victory.

Michigan City, Indiana’s Marcus Thompkins (139 ¾ lbs., 1-0) and Chanele Buckanan (139 lbs., pro debut) took turns battering one another in an entertaining scrap that largely neglected the jab and body punching, with Thompkins ultimately prevailing by decision.

Thompkins appeared to edge in the more effective blows, especially in the third. Judges scored the bout 40-36 all in favor of Thompkins.

In his pro debut, La Porte, Indiana’s Oswaldo Escobedo (130 ¾ lbs.) battered and ultimately stopped Racine, Wisconsin’s reluctant warrior Bobby Conners (128 lbs., 0-7) in two rounds. Referee Blake Allen halted the bout at 2:12 into the second round, awarding Escobedo a technical knockout victory.

And throughout, the Indiana fans were cheering loudly, signalling once again that Octavius James had put on another successful fight card that entertained the masses in attendence at the Majestic Star.
