By Ricardo Ibarra
In the main event former world title challenger and The Contender reality show alumnus, Peter Manfredo Jr. faces tough Northwest veteran Luis “el Lobo” Lopez. After losing a close decision to Jeff Lacy last year, Manfredo returned two months ago with a sixth round stoppage over Shane Benfield. He’s looking to continue his momentum with an impressive victory in Idaho. Although his opponent's record may suggest otherwise, Manfredo may be in for a tough fight on Saturday.
With only fourteen wins in twenty seven fights, at first glance it may seem that Lopez is only in this fight to provide padding for Manfredo’s record. But, Lopez has fought some quality opposition in his career and is one of the toughest competitors in the Pacific Northwest. He’s given some great efforts against such notables as David Banks, Jesse Brinkley, Ivan Stovall, and Hector Camacho Jr. When Lopez is in shape, he can hang in there with the best of them. Reportedly, he’s spent the last two weeks in training camp preparing for this fight and is in great shape. That’s good news for fight fans in Idaho.
The co-main event features a ten round welterweight bout between local favorite Favio Medina and Miami, Florida’s David Obregon. Medina has built up quite a following in the inland northwest, based in large part on his tendency to fall into exciting brawls. His last bout was a twelve round barn-burner against Santos Pakau. In what is sure to deliver fireworks, Villi “The Tongan Warrior” Bloomfield faces Leo Bercier in a six round rematch. The two battled to a draw over four, close, back and forth rounds in February.
Also on the card, Canadian Super middleweight prospect Mark Woolnough takes on Jonathan Reid in a six rounder. Undefeated Juan Santiago of Denver, Colorado takes a step up in competition against Montana’s Daniel Gonzalez. Worcester, Massachusetts’s Edwin Rodriguez will fight away from the east coast for the first time as he takes on Michael Birthmark. And local heavyweight prospect Skyler Anderson faces Tyrone Meux.
Doors open at 6pm, first fight starts at 7pm. Tickets can be purchased at the casino box office. For more information visit the casino website at http://www.cdacasino.com/
