Construction of New 'Hammond Boxing Club' Approved by Mayor McDermott!

By Dennis Hardesty

HAMMOND, Ind. -- Today at 2:45pm. Mayor Thomas M. McDermott Jr. gave his okay to start construction of the new "Hammond Boxing Club." It won't be long before we will be in our new gym turning out good fighters and giving those a chance to become contributing members of society.

This whole thing started with Raymundo Garcia. A business owner and a long time community activist. Ray told me about the building and I immediately called Jack Callahan. Along with Jack, Karen Boswell and I did our homework and pushed forward. I must say Karen did most of the homework; she is a workaholic and never stops until her task is completed.

We then got the blessing from Hammond Park Department Administrator Pat Moore. Pat is a department head that never forgot where he came from. Without his guidence, this project would have never taken off. Marty Weilgos, the Mayor's Chief Of Staff, liked the idea. And now the Mayor has jumped on ship. It doesn't get much better than that.

I will be showing the gym Sunday at 12 noon. If anyone is interested in seeing the layout of the new Hammond Boxing Club they can show up at 250 Ogden Street Sunday at 12pm.
