"I tell it like it is and not everyone wants to hear it, if you ask me a question I'll be upfront and honest with you, every time," says the lifelong Yerington, NV resident.
"People have been asking me for the last few years about Joey Gilbert and I always tell them the truth—he's not that good and he knows it. And that's why we won't be fighting.
"But now, we're set to fight and after all this time it's a personal thing for me. Everyone else I have fought it was inside the business of boxing. For this fight, it's personal, I flat out don't like the guy and I'm knocking him out."
Details of the long awaited Yerington/Reno showdown will be announced shortly. "Folks in Yerington and Reno are very excited about this fight. For the last three months all I've heard it "when do tickets go on sale and what round are you knocking him out," said Brinkley, a teammate of Gilbert's on The Contender Season One. About his current training schedule, Brinkley said, "I've been in Pawtucket, Rhode Island training for the last eight weeks before coming home for Thanksgiving. The bottom line is I've already beaten guys who are better than Gilbert. This year alone I've beaten Otis Griffin and Jason Naugler, they're both better than him. He's not as good as Anthony Bonsante and I've beaten him twice."
Gilbert has taken two recent tune up fights after a thirteen month layoff. Said Brinkley, "I saw that he had two fights, what does he think that fighting "Joe the Plumber" type guys is going to make him confident that he can beat me. The bottom line is he's lying to himself and his people are lying to him. He'll only realize that he's been lied to when he's being counted out by the referee in our fight."
The Brinkley/Gilbert bout will be promoted by "Let's Get It On" Promotions of Reno, Nevada and and Las Vegas based TKO BOXING Promotions.
Reno, Nevada based "Let's Get It On" Promotions was founded in 2000 by legendary boxing referee Mills Lane. In early 2005 he was joined by sons Terry and Tommy in the operations of the company. Along with Jesse Brinkley, Let's Get It On Promotions also promote highly regarded brothers Tyler and Derek Hinkey. They have consistently promoted world class boxing events in northern Nevada.
