West Portland Team Reports on Tacoma Jr. Golden Gloves

(Press Release)

The West Portland Boxing Team of Portland, OR competed in the 31st annual Tacoma Jr. Golden Gloves, held at the Al Davies Boys & Girls Club in Tacoma, WA on Saturday and Sunday, February 7th and 8th. Over 100 boxers competed in the two-day competition. Also traveling with West Portland were three brothers from Hillsboro’s Chief Cornerstone gym, whose coach was in Missouri attending the National Silver Gloves tournament. Overall, the combined teams of West Portland and Chief Cornerstone won ten bouts against only two defeats, and took home two outstanding boxer awards for the weekend.

The West Portland and Chief Cornerstone results were as follows:

Samuel Villalta of Beaverton defeated a boxer from Spokane on Saturday, and a boxer from the host gym (Tacoma) on Sunday to win the 9-10 year old 65lb championship.

Samuel’s brother, Anthony Villalta defeated a boxer from Yakima to win the 15-16 year old open division championship at 165lb.

Harris Redman of Beaverton improved his record to 2-0, with a victory over a boxer from Seattle, to win the novice senior division (17 and older) championship at 165lb.

Gunner Austin, 14, of Beaverton, competing in his first bout ever, lost a split decision to a boxer from Yakima with 18 bouts experience. Gunner had his opponent on the run from the opening bell, yet lost a close decision on points.

Carlos Rodney of Beaverton defeated two boxers from Seattle to win the 101lb 13-14 year old division. Carlos was also named outstanding boxer of the tournament in his age category.

Two other boxers from West Portland (Stephen Varlamov, 13 years old, 95lb, and Lisbet Vargas, senior division, 152lb) were unopposed champions of their respective divisions.

Carlos Mendoza of Hillsboro defeated a boxer from Salem on Saturday, and stopped a boxer from Olympia on Sunday to win the 9-10 year old 75lb championship. Carlos Mendoza was named outstanding boxer of the tournament for his age division.

Jesus Mendoza of Hillsboro defeated boxers from Seattle and Spokane to win the 11-12 year old 80lb division.
