West Portland Amateurs—Fred Enslow Memorial Results

By Katherine Dunn

It’s always this way— You have raffle tickets and donated prizes. Parents staff the food tables to sell nachos and chili dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, soda pop, candy bars and boxing paraphernalia and mementos. There are lots of families and a cheerful mood urged on by the guy holding the announcing microphone. The stage at one side overlooks the ring. The room is big but jammed with more than a dozen boxing clubs here from all over Oregon and Washington, more than 60 bouts over the course of two days, lots of judges and refs showing up to volunteer. It’s relaxed and intense, busy and lazy, exciting and soothing. For the people who make it all happen, it’s exhausting.

This is the annual Fred Enslow Memorial Amateur Boxing Tournament hosted by the West Portland Boxing Club at their home base—the Garden Home Recreation Center on Oleson Rd in Portland, Oregon. This is the one big fund raiser hosted by the club each year and the action is constant.

The 2009 Fred Enslow memorial took place this year on Saturday and Sunday, Feb.28 and March 1. The results of the more than sixty bouts in all ages and weight divisions were as follows:
