Greggains was a talented and "heady" middleweight boxer; He was Amateur Middleweight Champion of the West Coast and Amateur Middleweight Champion of the Pacific Coast during 1888-1889; He later became a sparring partner of Jim Hall; Alec had a brother, Mike, who boxed

During his career, he defeated such men as George LaBlanche, Billy McCarthy, Charles Turner, Andy Breslin, Billy Keneally and Jack Langdon

Greggains went on to become a promoter in his hometown of San Francisco; He has been credited with being the originator of boxing cards featuring four-round bouts
