OUMA OUT OF JUNE 5 TITLE FIGHT NEW YORK (June 1, 2004) - Kassim Ouma was forced to withdraw from his world title fight against Verno Phillips scheduled for Saturday, June 5, at 9 p.m. ET/PT* on Showtime Championship Boxing, it has been announced by Gary Shaw, the show’s promoter. Ouma’s camp has indicated that Kassim suffered a sprain of the thoracic spine with muscle spasms which prevents him from breathing deeply. A new opponent for Phillips or a replacement fight will be announced in the near future.
In the SHOWTIME co-feature from The Leggett & Platt Athletic Center at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Missouri, Jeff “Left Hook’’ Lacy will defend his World Boxing Council (WBC) Continental Americas/North American Boxing Association (NABA) and United States Boxing Association (USBA) super middleweight crowns when he meets IBF/World Boxing Association (WBA) International titleholder Vitali Tsypko. Gary Shaw Productions, LLC, in association with Tony Holden Productions, will promote the doubleheader. SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING’s Steve Albert and Al Bernstein will call the action from ringside with Jim Gray serving as roving reporter. The executive producer of the SHOWTIME telecast is Jay Larkin, with David Dinkins, Jr. producing and Bob Dunphy directing.
