THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT AT CATALINA’S
By Katherine Dunn
After two sizzling days at 100+ degrees, most of the temperate folks of the Pacific Northwest were fried and just wanted to huddle with an ice pack in front of air conditioners. Still, on the evening of Saturday, July 24, five hardy boxing teams and a fire proof hundred or so fans made their way to the parking lot out back of Catalina’s Mexican Restaurant on 109th and Sandy in Portland, Oregon. The event was a fund raiser for the historic Knott Street Boxing Club of Portland’s Matt Dishman Community Center. One of Knott Street’s Coaches, Joel Caldera, is the proprietor of Catalina’s, and his crew and many volunteers hustled up shadey tents, tarps and lots of cool water. A breeze sprang up, and it was downright comfortable. The boxers and the ref were in the hard light of the ring for their sessions, but the action was just as hot. After the show most of those attending trooped into the air conditioned restaurant and enjoyed more fine cooking. Caldera was pleased enough to say he’ll host another show at Catalina’s next month. Results of the seven bouts were as follows:

10-11 years, 70 lbs, Oscar Herrera of Beaverton PAL Boxing Team won over Harvey Platero of the Knott Street Boxing Club.

11-12 years, 106 lbs, Narek Tefecktian of Knott Street won over Pepe Herrera of Beaverton PAL.

Open Seniors, 145 lbs, Nate Smith of the Tacoma Boxing Team won over Oswaldo Rojas of the Grand Avenue Boxing Team.

8-9 years, 60 lbs, Lorenzo Caldera of Knott Street won over Romello Clay of Tacoma Boxing.

Open Sr., 130 lbs, Marquis Weston of Tacoma Boxing won over Wilmar Monge of the Grand Avenue Gym.

Open Sr., 165 lbs, Roger Cantrell of Tacoma Boxing won over Robert Morteller of Victory Boxing Gym in Albany, OR.

Open Sr., heavyweights, David Carey of Tacoma Boxing won over 6’9" southpaw Breann Lowrie of Vancouver, B.C. Canada.

Open Sr. 165 lbs, Cedric Armstrong of Knott Street won over Christian Salazar of Grand Avenue Gym.

Outstanding Boxer of the meet was Roger Cantrell of the Tacoma Boxing Club. The Knott Street Team presented a bronze boxer award to their coach John Peters for his extensive efforts on behalf of the team. Reffing all seven bouts in the 100 degree heat was Fred Ryan of the Grand Avenue Gym. The ringside physician was Dr. Ezra Rabey.
