Estrada-Nunez rematch in Olympic quarterfinals match
Monday afternoon in Athens

ATHENS (August 20, 2004) – The much anticipated rematch between United States super heavyweight champion Jason Estrada and Cuba’s Michel Lopez Nunez is set for Monday’s quarterfinals at the Olympic Games in Greece.

Last year in the Dominican Republic, Estrada defeated Nunez, 14-6, to become the first non-Cuban to capture a gold medal in the 201+pound division at the Pan-American Games. Jason also was the first boxer to win both the U.S. Nationals and U.S. Challenge three years in a row. (2001-2003).

Estrada, of Providence, schooled Tonga’s Mau’afu Hawke, 30-11, in this past Tuesday’s opening round match at The Olympics. Nunez struggled to defeat Rustan Sardov (Uzbekistan), 18-13, advancing to Monday’s (3:15-3:30 pm live ET) rematch against Estrada.

“All I can say is may the best man win,” Estrada commented on his rematch against Nunez. “He’s good; I’m good. It’ll be a good match. He has real boxing skills, the best I’ve ever faced, but I’d rather be in against a boxer like him than a puncher with less skills who makes the bout sloppy. I out-boxed him in the Pan-Am Games.”

The Estrada-Nunez winner will be favored against the Mohamed Aly (Egypt)-Jaroslav Jaksto (Lithuania) quarterfinals winner in the August 27th semifinals. World and European champion Alexander Povetkin (Russia) is the favorite for the championship Aug. 29th gold medal match.
