Referee Podgorski raises Luciano Perez' Arm in Victory (Chicago, IL): Luciano Perez and Ivan Rodriguez headed up a slew of exciting bouts on the undercard of Dominic Pesoli/8 Count Productions' "Best in Chicago" fight card at the Aragon Ballroom. Picking up from the main and co-main events, we bring you to Luciano "El Gallo Bravo" Perez' bout:
Bout 5
Welterweights Luciano Perez (10-1-0, 10 KOs, 151 lbs) vs. Jerome Elder (9-6-0, 9 KOs, 151.5 lbs.)
"El Gallo Bravo" Perez opened up the fight to the deafening cheers from his hometown crowd. The murderous puncher took care of business in quick fashion by stopping the stunned Elder at 1:34 of round one. Perez showed marked improvement in his footwork and defense and if he continues improvement will be a force to be reckoned with in the junior middleweight division. The Chicagoan improves to 11-1-0. There seemed to be a bit of controvesy in the stoppage but referee Pete Podgorski stated, " Elder had his head and hands down and his eyes were closed. There's no standing eight count and I advise the fighters to take a knee if they're in trouble. You can't be hit with 5 consecutive punches and not respond. You just can't do that without a standing eight count so I stopped the fight to prevent further punishment."
Bout 4
Michael Nevitt vs. Vince Durham Cruiserweight
Nevitt (7-0-0) working behind a short jab was able to out hustle veteran Vince Durham (21-35-3, 4 KOs) causing him to retire at 1:25 of the fifth round. Durham complained of a problem with his right shoulder, which resulted in him turning away from Nevitt and saying "no mas." Durham was quoted as saying; " I couldn't throw my right hand anymore. Years ago I would've killed this guy but to go on like this would have been an injustice to myself." Nevitt scores his first TKO and now moves to 8-0-0, 1KO.
Lightweights Tommy Pyle vs. Jamie Alvarado Pyle (2-0-1, 1 KO) opened up the round with a lot of lateral movement, which proved to be effective against the solid pressure of Jaime Alvarado (0-2-2). Bach, being a long lean fighter proved to be the faster of the two as he repeatedly hit the onrushing Alvarado at will with quick combinations. Alvarado finally caught up to the dancing Pyle in round 3 and landed his best shots of the fight with a series of combinations that left him covering up. The final round saw a game of cat and mouse as both men landed effective punches with Alvarado acting as a miniature Joe Frazier, and Pyle trying to do his best impression of Ali. The last round proved to test both men as neither gave way to the other. At bouts end both men were bloodied, bruised and exhausted. The judges scored the bout 39-37 Pyle, 39-37 Alvarado, and 38-38 resulting in a draw.
Bout 2
Ivan Rodriguez vs. Omar Reyes, Bantamweights The bout featuring two native Chicagoans proved to be a barn burner. Ivan Rodriguez (3-0-0, 1 KO) used effective forward motion to carry the fight to his foe and backed Omar Reyes (0-1) up against the ropes. Reyes however, fought back with determination and countered well of the ropes catching Rodriguez with some good power shots. Not to be out done, Rodriguez roared back with good body shots to steal a close round. Rodriguez, a fistic windmill, continued to dominate the rest of the action packed bout with the cleaner punching and the more effective aggression. To his credit, Reyes put up a spirited effort in a tough but losing effort. As the bout came to a close the body punching Rodriguez established early in the first round appeared to slow Reyes down. The judges scored the bout 40-36 twice, and 40-35 for the winner Rodriguez.
Bout 1 Jr. Middleweights Corey Budd vs. Jorge Gonzalez Pro debut:
Jorge Gonzalez came out with a strong jab in his pro debut, to establish himself early in the bout. It proved to be strategic move that resulted in the desired effect as Gonzalez soon began to dominate the fight. Budd (6-6-0, 6 KOs) wanted to use his height and use feints to shift Gonzalez out of position. It proved unsuccessful as Gonzalez kept catching him with overhand rights. Both connected with good solid combinations. Round two proved to be the bloodiest round of the fight as Cobb fought back valiantly with blood streaming down his face and spraying everywhere. Rounds three and four saw Gonzalez leading with the jab and landing effective uppercuts while Cobb tried unsuccessfully to land power punches, At the close of the fourth the two exchanged blows for the final 15 seconds to the lusty cheers of the crowd. The judges scored the bout 40-36 thrice for Jorge Gonzales.
