New Boxing Promoters in Portland, Oregon
Showcase Boxing Promotions schedules July 20th fight card at the Portland Hilton

Pro boxing is as fiscally risky for promoters as it is physically risky for fighters. The last pro boxing show in Portland, Oregon was broadcast on HBO in November of 2005 from the Rose Garden when welterweight champ “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather took the starch out of canny Sharmba Mitchell in a sixth round TKO.
The one before that was in September of 2002, also at the Rose Garden and also on HBO, when then Light Heavyweight champ Roy Jones Jr. packed the house for his 6th round KO of rugged Brit, Clinton Woods.
Both these big TV shows were sponsored by the Jordan Division of Nike and were staged by out-of-state promoters. Some local fighters appeared on each of the undercards.
It’s been many years since a local promoter tried to present pro boxing in Portland and decades since anyone broke even, much less made money in the process. Now, a local trio is planning to offer regular club shows in the ballroom of the Hilton Hotel in downtown Portland.
The three men, A.J. Brown of Lake Oswego, and Jeff Torrey and Ray Milton of Portland, operating under the rubric of Showcase Promotions have applied for a professional boxing promoter’s license from the State of Oregon Boxing & Wrestling Commission. Brad Darcy, the executive director of the Commission, says the group is on track with their application and “barring unforeseen developments,” will be licensed.
Jeff Torrey boxed as an amateur for the West Portland Boxing Club from 1989 through the early 90’s. Torrey says he’s always had a passion for the sport and is “taking a risk for what I love.” Torrey says Portland has been a great fight town and can be again. “I remember my dad going to the fights every month at the Marriott.”
Modeling their shows on the long-time success of the monthly “Battle of the Ballroom” shows in Irvine, CA., Showcase has settled on Thursday nights as ideal for downtown fight cards. Three events are planned for this year and six next year. The first show is scheduled for July 20th at the Hilton.
Torrey says the Showcase debut will feature Portland light heavyweight Marcus Pernell in an 8 round main event. Pernell, a graduate of the respected Knott Street Boxing Club amateur program, is now trained and managed by his stepfather, Ray Lampkin, the Hall of Fame lightweight boxer. The 28 year-old Pernell has a pro record of 12 wins with five knockouts, one loss and two draws. His opponent for the Hilton show has not yet been named.
Torrey says tickets will be available through Ticketmaster starting on Saturday, June 10 and prices will range from $35 to $75. (www.showcaseboxing.com)

Why such a long period of inactivity in Portland? There used to be monthly shows in the 80's. I did hear that the commission there got out of control and wrecked it for promoters but that's been a while ago.
