CHICAGO, June 15 – Once again, middleweight boxer David “The Weezel” Estrada is traveling to face an up and coming prospect in his hometown as the designated opponent. This time, he’s facing Ishmail Arvin, who at 13-0-2 with 6 knockouts, at Michael’s Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD this evening.

At 9-6 and 7 knockouts, Estrada is better than his record indicates, not having benefited from the guidance of a shrewd management team. In fact, he’s self-managed. However, at 29 years old, he’s not getting any younger.

In addition to boxing, Estrada attends college and serves as a personal trainer. In fact, he counts me as one of his clients. As gregarious outside of the ring as he is intense within, he's an excellent motivator. Thus far, he has helped me lose 30 pounds since March.

Following our training session and a quick conditioning workout under his personal trainer, Glen Peavey at Real Exercise in Wadsworth, Illinois on Tuesday night, he spoke with me about his upcoming bout.

JUAN AYLLON: How are you doing?

DAVID ESTRADA: I’m feeling good! I just found out today that I’m going to fight him. I’ve been in the gym pretty much, so I feel pretty confident. They offered me this fight in the past and, for whatever reason, it didn’t work out. They called me again and here we go!

He’s 13-0 with 6 knockouts, he’s an undefeated prospect out of Baltimore and he has a pretty good amateur background.

JA: I understand you’ve been offered some pretty big fights recently. Tell us about that.

DE: I would have taken two fights recently offered to me because they offered really good money. I got called to fight both [former world champions] William Joppy and David Santos, but in the end, I decided not to take either of those fights, because that’s a whole ‘nother level. Each fight I take because I think I can win it. So, in the end, I had to say ‘no’ to those fights.

JA: What can you tell us about goals for the next year?

DE: I want to keep winning my fights. I don’t want to lose anymore.

I’m also in summer school taking college courses. I’m going to keep going to college, and finish my two classes this summer.

As a personal trainer, I want to continue training my clients. My goal for you is to keep helping you lose weight and getting in better shape! And we’ll go from there.

JA: Any last thoughts?

DE: Hopefully, I can come back to Chicago with a win. Pray for me! Hopefully, neither one of us gets seriously hurt.

I’ll do my best.
