By Jorge Bravo at ringside
Due to an illness, Efren Hinojosa had to drop out of the scheduled fight with David Diaz ( 31-1-1-16 KO), but Cristian Favella (10-6-4-7 KO) didn’t let Diaz take that IBA Light weight Championship belt without making Diaz work every single round. Swollen cheek and a miner cut under his eye brow, the ever so popular Diaz outboxed Favella.
Round One- Pressure, some can deal with it some can’t. Favella is one that can and did it well. With Diaz’s jab and various other combinations Diaz keeps Favella active around the ring ropes for most of round one. Diaz does get land a clean and beautiful uppercut on Favella’s face. Cristian holds his composer and lands a few shots of his own before the round ends. Round Two- Dazzling Diaz continues to pressure cook Favella but with a good defense stand and a comeback punch for every two punches Diaz throws, Favella didn’t seem bothered by the jab Diaz throw though most of round two. Both fighters connected in the round but Favella not returning the same amount punches Diaz landed. Round Three- A good round for Favella, inflicting a clean piece of his glove on Diaz’s face in the first minute of the round. Diaz picking it up a little foot work and some dodging and weaving; Diaz avoids further connecting from Favella. By the end of the round one starts to notice a small indication of a swollen cheek bone on Diaz’s left side, perhaps it was the punch Favella impacted earlier in the round. Round Four- The round starts off well for Favella but then quickly becomes Diaz’s round. Diaz works his opponent middle and comes upstairs to land a nice right high hook right back to his opponent’s cheek. As the round progresses Diaz is able to land 3 big hooks on before the round comes to an end. Round Five- In round five both boxers exchange the feel of leather both the side of the body as well directly to the face. With Diaz landing more hits, letting his hands fly and connecting this round was sure to go to him. Round Six- It’s apparent now that Diaz has a swollen left cheek as it looked 2 xs as big as it did in round three. Dazzling Dias works in his uppercuts right in to Favella defense stand while he moves his punches to Favella’s left head temple right back down for a few down into the middle then right back to finish his show in this round. The crowd cheers on Diaz’s name for little more but the mighty bell rings and the show pauses until the next round. Round Seven- Favella is successful in landing a few punches on his part as well as Diaz. The round continues while their appears to be a small cut on Diaz’s right eye brow most likely coming from Favella’s successful landings. Round Eight- As many might know, Mexican fighters are fighters till the end. Favella is one of those fighters. And when he lands a good punch his face does Britten as it did in this round when he connected a big punch on Diaz face.
Round Nine- Diaz starts to concentrate a bit more on his opponent’s body. While Diaz lands body shots Favella now puts top pressure on Diaz, being able to apply pressure on Diaz, Favella uses it to get Diaz against the ropes for few seconds. Favella looking confident he continues to wail on Diaz on every opportunity he has. Round Ten- After Diaz’s corner takes care of the swollen cheek we’re back on fight mode. Favella’s defense position has worked well for him as he face looks unharmed in comparison to Diaz’s but nevertheless Diaz outboxes Favella in though the entire round . Round Eleven- How wants it more? Is the question one would ask in the last couple of rounds. In round eleven Diaz gives his fans a good show of combinations, starting off on his opponent’s middle to rib cage up to the head with hooks and uppercut. Although a though round for both fighter the crowd cheers on there hometown fighter. Round Twelve- Hook, hook and more hooks to Favella side Diaz decides. While Diaz works Favella side Favella comes in with his own version of hooks to Diaz’s head. Still all in all Diaz out punching Favella though all of round Twelve. Judges Scored the bout 120 -108, 116-112, and 119-109 all for David Diaz, winner by unanimous decision. Mike Gonzalez vs. Jeff Hinds:
Round One- As soon as the bell rung Gonzalez charges at Hinds like a pit-bull let out of his cage. Gonzalez being the aggressor right of the bat Hinds holds his punches back as Gonzalez hooks and jabs his way in Hinds. Landing solid hits on Hinds’ head the crown cheers this lightweight on. Gonzalez attempting to land a big left slipped and landed hard on his knee, but jumped back up and finished the round. Round Two- With Gonzalez landing most of the big punches in this round Hinds and his hits don’t go unnoticed. Round two come to an end. Round Three-Gonzalez Knocks out Hinds with a big left to the face, knocking Hinds off the ropes on to the ring floor. Gonzalez wins by knockout with 1 min and 30 in round three.
