Dipace grabbed the first win of the day, defeating the hometown boxer Demir Kaya of Turkey on a 28-22 decision for his second win of the tournament. Tapia won a close 16-14 decision over Uzbekistan’s Doterjom Mahmudov to advance to the semifinals while Arias recorded a 30-23 victory over Zhanbos Abbiomanov of Kazakhstan in their quarterfinal match-up. It was the second win of the tournament for both boxers. Keith Tapia took the ring for the first time on Wednesday and he made his debut a successful one, winning a 12-9 decision over Tokkaya Denizcan of Turkey.
Pinweight Louie Byrd (Denver, Colo.) lost a 31-23 decision to Turkey’s Memis Ulas in their quarterfinal bout. Five U.S. boxers will compete in quarterfinal action with light flyweight Randy Caballero (Coachella, Calif.); lightweight Javier Molina (Commerce, Calif.); light welterweight Gerardo Ibarra (Houston, Texas); middleweight Dominic Wade (Largo, Md.) and light heavyweight David Galmore (Lake Charles, La.) all boxing on Thursday.
The team will is being led by USA Boxing National Coaching Director Dan Campbell (Colorado Springs, Colo.); Al Simpson (Charlotte, N.C.) and Robert Martin (Washington D.C.). Carlos Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.) is serving as team manager for the event.
The Cadet World Championships showcases the best 15 and 16-year-old boxers in the world. The United States won five medals at the 2005 Cadet World Championships, including a gold medal by Isiah Thomas.
