Three U.S. Boxers Win Quarterfinal Contests at the 2006 Cadet World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey
U.S. Team Advances Seven Boxers to the Semifinal Round


COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – After two days of quarterfinal action, Team USA has earned seven berths in the medal round at the 2006 Cadet World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. Three more U.S. boxers advanced to semifinal competition with victories on Thursday in Turkey.

Light flyweight Randy Caballero (Coachella, Calif.) recorded the first win of the day winning a second round stoppage outscored over Germany’s Oleg Schafer in their quarterfinal match-up. Caballero moved out to a 21-6 lead in the second stanza to win the mandatory stoppage. Fellow California native Javier Molina joined Caballero in the semifinal round with an impressive 22-8 win over Vladimir Sidorov of boxing powerhouse Russia in their lightweight contest. The third U.S. victor competed in the light welterweight division. Gerardo Ibarra (Houston, Texas) won a 24-9 victory over Korea’s Chun Sik Kim to round out the quarterfinal winners from the United States. The 2006 Cadet World Championships is the first major international event for all three boxers.

2005 Cadet World Championships middleweight silver medalist Dominic Wade (Largo, Md.) dropped a 22-9 decision to Iskandarov Hafir of Azerbaijan and light heavyweight David Galmore (Lake Charles, La.) suffered a third round stoppage loss to Dimitro Asedevich of Ukraine.

The U.S. team will enjoy an off day on Friday before beginning semifinal action on Saturday. The 2006 team has already set a record medal count for the United States with seven medals guaranteed with their performance through quarterfinal action.

The seven boxers advancing to final round action are: light flyweight Randy Caballero (Coachella, Calif.); light bantamweight Samuel DiPace (Las Cruces, N.M.); lightweight Javier Molina (Commerce, Calif.); light welterweight Gerardo Ibarra (Houston, Texas); welterweight Glen Tapia (Passaic, N.J.); light middleweight Luis Arias (Milwaukee, Wis.); and heavyweight Keith Tapia (Bronx, N.Y.). Tapia recently earned a gold medal at the 2006 Aliyev Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan in May.

The team will is being led by USA Boxing National Coaching Director Dan Campbell (Colorado Springs, Colo.); Al Simpson (Charlotte, N.C.) and Robert Martin (Washington D.C.). Carlos Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.) is serving as team manager for the event.

The Cadet World Championships showcases the best 15 and 16-year-old boxers in the world. The United States won five medals at the 2005 Cadet World Championships, including a gold medal by Isiah Thomas.
