Pulitzer Prize Winning Sportswriter Ira Berkow at N.L.U.

CHICAGO -- Named the “Best Sportswriter in New York,” Pulitzer Prize winner Ira Berkow will talk about the art of covering sports in a free discussion on Monday evening, March 6 at National-Louis University’s Chicago Campus.

Come and meet Ira Berkow at the 6 P.M. complimentary reception, 122 S. Michigan Avenue, second floor Atrium. Stay for the free and open to the public conversation beginning at 7 P.M. Learn about some of the fascinating stories Ira Berkow has covered as a sports columnist and feature writer for The New York Times for 25 years.

Find out about his Pulitzer Prize winning article, “The Minority Quarterback,” his 17 books, including, most recently, the memoir: Full Swing: Hits, Runs and Errors in a Writer’s Life, the best-sellers Red: a Biography of Red Smith and Maxwell Street: Survival in a Bazaar, and his book The DuSable Panthers, named one of the best young adult books of the last 75 years by the New York Public Library.

Ask about how a mediocre student from Chicago wound up with these accolades:

· “Sports at its best is a kind of music, and sports writing is a kind of libretto. Ira Berkow is among the best—a Sondheim of the sports page.”—George Will

· “Ira Berkow over the years has regularly given us sportswriting of the most elegant kind—his work glistens with intelligence and creativity, and has been a constant pleasure for readers of The New York Times.” –David Halberstam.

· “Ira Berkow belongs to that rare breed: a writer who specializes in sports but whose subjects represent a broad range in human aspirations and challenges.”—Gay Talese

· “One of the treasures of New York City”—New York magazine annual “Best of New York.”

Mr. Berkow has written extensively on Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Hank Greenberg and many others.

Reservations are necessary for this free evening, sponsored by the Ernest R. Wish Pulitzer Prize Series and NLU’s Master of Science in Written Communication Program. Please call 312-261-3777 or email CAS-Conferences@nl.edu.

Ira Berkow is looking forward to answering your questions on Monday evening, March 5. Mr. Berkow is the sixth speaker of honor in The Ernest R. Wish Pulitzer Prize Series presented by the National-Louis University’s Master of Science in Written Communication Program, offering students with an undergraduate degree in any field a unique variety of courses and personal attention from instructors who are published writers.

This Master’s program, directed by Joanne Koch, includes courses in journalism, screenwriting, feature writing, writing children’s books, desktop publishing, editing, writing nonfiction books, novels, humor and short fiction.
