MIAMI, Fla., December 16 – With a single right hand, Round Lake’s Jose Andres Hernandez upset the rising star’s nationally televised coming out party.

This wasn’t supposed to happen. After all, Jason “The American Boy” Litzau not only sported a charismatic style of fighting at 20-1 and 18 knockouts, but also all-American good looks with blonde hair and blue eyes. In short, he was white and he could fight. That translated into potential big bucks at the sports gate.

However, with that smashing right, Hernandez (22-3, 14 KO’s) derailed Litzau’s plans, emphatically knocking him out at 2:52 into the eighth round.

It was a right hand that spoke volumes. Broadcast from the Miccosukee Resort and Casino over HBO’s “Boxing After Dark,” it was almost as if Hernandez said, "Welcome to the new look of America."

And the numbers back up that right hand. According to http://theamericas.org, Hispanics-Latinos represent the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population at 66 percent growth from 1980 to 1990, dwarfing the nine percent growth in the nation's total population. By the year, 2040, the Hispanic population is projected to be 25 percent of the total U.S. population. Presently, Hispanic households number over 6.8 million, outnumbering the size of any other ethnic group.

Welcome, indeed. In addition to title aspirations, Hernandez owns a bar and attends college in pursuit of his dream of becoming a lawyer someday. As such, he hails from Chicago’s tight-knit community of boxers, which includes such fighters as World Boxing Council Interim Lightweight Title holder David Diaz, “Macho” Miguel Hernandez, WIBA Lightweight Title holder Rita Figueroa, David “The Weezel” Estrada, Donovan George, Rudy Cisneros, Fres Oquendo, Nora Reyes and many more.

Bravo.

In honor of his achievement, on the evening of Thursday, December 21, Hernandez’ bar, Copas, will host a celebration at 7 PM.

Joining the festivities will be WBC Interim Lightweight champion David Diaz, the CBZ’s Juan C. Ayllon and others. "Macho" Miguel Hernandez said, "He's my man," and said that he plans on coming out, as well.

Copas is located at 304 N. Cedar Lake Rd., Round Lake, IL 6007-3216. Phone number is (847) 546-4433.

If you can make it, come out with us as Jose Hernandez celebrates his own coming out party.
