Arce Wins Unanimous Decision

By Walter Arechiga

The Honda Center in Anaheim, California was where all the action took place Saturday night.Mexico's Jorge Arce (46-3-1)scored a unanimous decision over Argentina's Julio Roque Ler (23-1)in a 12rd W.B.C eliminator fight. Both fighters weighed in at 114 3/4 lbs.

Arce, much the taller of the two, started fast in the 1st round, stalking Ler and unloading combinations. Ler was up against the ropes trying to counter. Ler refused to fight throughout the fight, keeping his gloves high protecting his face and not throwing many punches. As the bout progressed, fans started booing the Argentine fighter. Fans expected a war, but all they got was Ler on his bike avoiding Arce's punches. Ler did not have the firepower to keep Arce off him. In round 11 Arce finally caught Ler with a hook that hurt him, but he couldnt finish him off. It was a dull, boring match because Ler did not come to fight.

Arce's next fight should be against Mexico's Christian Mijares for the W.B.C. super flyweight title. I was lucky enough to be seated next to Mijares and his manager, Nacho Huizar. They are looking forward to fighting Arce. They think Mijares’ speed will be too much for Arce.

On the Undercard:

Jose Zertuche of Mexico (19-3-2)faced Kelly Pavlik of Youngstown, OH,(29-0)for the N.A.B.F. Middleweight Championship. Zertuche tried to brawl with Pavlik in the opening rounds, but Pavlik was connecting the harder punches. By the 4th round all the steam had left Zertuche's punches, and he was eating leather. Zertuche was being punished as Pavlik scored at will. Zertuche switched to southpaw, trying to confuse Pavlik, but Pavlik was connecting with hard right hands.

I think Zertuche's corner should have stopped the fight in the 7th as Zertuche was absorbing too much punishment.

In the 8th round, Pavlik knew Zertuche was ready to go. He stalked his opponent connecting with a right then a right upper cut. Zertuche was helpless and the ref stepped in at 1:40 0f the 8th round.
