West Portland Salutes Coach Bill Meartz
COACH Bill Meartz officially stepped down as leader of the West Portland Boxing Club at the beginning of January. On Saturday, Feb. 10, his long service was celebrated with a cheerful gathering in the big auditorium at Garden Home Recreation Center, where he staged his annual two-day amateur tournament for some fifteen years or so.
In his nearly thirty years involvement in the amateur sport, Coach Bill has served as President of the Oregon Association and most recently as President of US Amateur Boxing. Among his extensive international experience, he coached the U.S. team at the Pan Am Games, and the U.S. Women’s team at the World Championships in Turkey.
Coach Bill says he’s not completely gone, but will continue to organize two regular amateur shows. First up is the March 31 show at the Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City, Oregon. The 2007 event will be this state’s first pro-am show with a projected four amateur matches followed by two professional matches. Meartz will also continue to organize the annual Governor Hotel Smoker in Portland, which has been an effective fundraiser for the amateur program.
There was plenty of excellent food, two great cakes, and a lot of friends, students and former students eager to shake the coach’s hand and say thanks for all he’s done. The director of the Community Center presented a handsome plaque honoring his long service. Welterweight Molly McConnell, the former national amateur champion, presented a handsome scrapbook of photos and messages from the boxers of The West Portland Boxing Club.
The West Portland Boxing Club continues under the guidance of Coach Jason Marquoit, an attorney and former amateur boxer taught by Meartz. Marquoit’s capable wife and fellow attorney, Lisa provides crucial administrative assistance. Leonard Trygg, and other volunteer coaches are also still on board for this busy program.

Why did Meartz retire so abruptly?Is it true he was forced out at the National level when he was Pres. of the very troubled USA Amateur Boxing..Is it true the USA Olympic committee brought in book keepers and found hundreds of Thousands of dollars missing? This on top of the 3.5 million that went missing back in the 90's.. Whats up ? As usual they don't want to inform the membership..Amateur Boxing has been under the control of a league of creeps and its catching up...We don't win Gold because we don't send our best boxers and we don't send our best coaches either...Check it out..Franky
