Champ fills in for Teddy Atlas at ringside

DETROIT, Mich., March 30, 2007 -– Light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins will be a guest analyst on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights, taking the place of famed ringside analyst Teddy Atlas, who is off this week.

Hopkins, who will be joined by ABC sports commentator Todd Harris, will provide play-by-play action for the fight card which features local favorite Mary Jo Sanders (23-0, 7 KOs), the IBA middleweight champion and the daughter of former Detroit Lions tight end Charlie Sanders, against f ormer WIBF cruiserweight champion Valerie Mahfood (19-12-3, 9 KOs) for the IBA Female World Championship. The fights will take place at Wayne Hall of Cobo Center in Detroit starting at 9 p.m.

Additionally, Laila Ali, ranked by Ring magazine as the No. 1 pound-for-pound female fighter in the world, will be in-studio helping analyze the Sanders-Mahfood fight.

The co-feature will match top 10-ranked Joel Julio (29-1, 27 KOs; ranked WBA #4, IBF #4, WBO #5, WBC #7) against Thomas Davis (11-3-2, 1 ND, 7 KOs).
