Boxing returned to the Northern Quest Casino in Airway Heights, Washington this past Sunday. In the main event former WBA featherweight title holder Freddie Norwood ( 42-2-1 23KO) suffered his first setback after a successful five fight comeback, losing by DQ to late replacement Johnnie "The Lumberjack" Edwards (13-1-1 7KO). From the outset of the bout things started to go wrong for Norwood. The former champ caught a swift counter right hook on the jaw as he stepped in behind his right jab. The punch had him in some trouble, forcing him to hold on to his opponent, a move that sent both of them crashing to the canvas. After a quick check from the referee both men resumed fighting in the center the ring. Norwood went back to forcing the fight and caught another hard hook on the inside, this time the punch buckled his knees and sent him falling forward. Norwood used a move perhaps more suited for the MMA ranks to avoid a knockdown call from the ref as he held on and tackled his opponent to the canvas. No fouls were called from the referee, neither was a knockdown. Norwood kept his distance for the remainder of the round as his opponent racked up points with his jab.

In the second round Norwood stepped up his attack, winging punches at his opponent's head and landing his straight left consistently out of his southpaw stance. After repeatedly failing to land his right hook, Edwards used lateral movement to avoid Norwood's attack. Norwood succeeded in cutting off the ring towards the end of the round and closed out the second landing two hard lefts to Edward's head. The third round saw Edwards take back control of the fight, moving in and out, pickings his shots and finding the openings for his one-two combinations. Edwards continued to frustrate Norwood as he moved around the ring, switching between a southpaw and a conventional stance. That frustration seemed to come to a boil as Norwood strayed below the belt with a hard left that drew boos from the crowd. The referee gave Edwards time to recover and gave a stern warning to Norwood. After taking a short rest, Edwards finished out the round keeping his distance.
