David ‘The Weezel’ Estrada Knocks Out Robert Kamya in Four!

HINKLEY, Minn.—David “The Weezel” Estrada (11-10, 8 KO’s) delivered with power in a crossroads middleweight fight against a much more experienced opponent, Robert Kamya (16-8, 4 KO's) at the Grand Casino. Estrada didn’t just win; he knocked him out!

Calling from Minnesota via cell, Estrada reached me at ringside in Merrillville, Indiana, where I had witnessed fellow Chicagoan middleweight Michael "The Midnight Stalker" Walker demolish his opponent in the first round.

Kamya, who's a rough and tumble fighter, has a record of 16-8 and 4 knockouts that includes defeating Alex Bunema in August 2005 for the WBC Continental Americas light middleweight title. This is the same Bunema who stopped former IBF Light Middleweight title holder, Roman Karmazin, last month.

In his last bout in September, Kamya was stopped by Ronald Hearns, son of all-time boxing great, Tommy "The Hitman" Hearns.

David "The Weezel" Estrada, whose record currently stands at 11-10 and 8 knockouts, had signed a contract earlier this week to fight Kamya. However, two days ago, he was informed that he'd be fighting James Crayton instead. Then came the last minute change.

“I dropped him in the second or third,” said Estrada of his victory over Kamya. “I hit him with a body shot, and hit him [to the head] with a right hand—you could hear the echo in the stadium. When I hit him with the right hand you could feel the vibration through the arm!”

“I knocked [Kamya] out in the fourth round with about a minute left; I don’t know. It was a good fight. He was tough!”

Estrada continued, “All of my fights…I’m [either] going to get stopped or I’m going to get the knockout. Only three fights of mine went the distance. And in those fights, I dropped the other guy. [In my distance fights], only Turner didn’t end up that way.”

“I just want to thank God for being there for me. Thank you to: My wife, Francie; my coach, Jorge Hernandez; my personal trainers, Glen and Julie [Peavey]from “Real Exercise”; my chiropractor, Dr. David C. Smith; you—Juan Ayllon, Cyber Boxing Zone; and all my fans in Chicago. When I let my hands go, I win.”

Continuing, Estrada effused, “Jorge slapped me hard on the left cheek and the right cheek [in between rounds] and said, ‘What’s your problem? What are you waiting for?’ And I let my hands go.”

“I just found out about this fight the day before yesterday—all of my fights are last second,” said Estrada, who was still taking it all in. “You stay have to stay in shape in boxing because you might get that phone call. I got that phone call and look what happened to me! I’m happy with my win. I knocked him out.”

“This is a great booster for me and it gives me an indication of where I’m at.”

Estrada, who also serves as my physical trainer, said with a hint of irony in his voice, “Thank you, Juan, for being there for me, and when I get back, I’ve got to get you into the gym!”

Just then, fellow Chicago boxer Michael Walker—who was standing by—got on the phone.

He said, “This is Michael. I heard you got a knockout, too. We’re going to do some working out, too! I’ll give you a call next week!”

Congratulations to David Estrada for a victory well earned.
