Lueckenhoff, Campuzano Meet with FEBCOMBOX to Improve Boxing Regulation

[Editor's note: Tim Lueckenhoff, President of the Association of Boxing Commissions, and Jake Hall, Boxing Commissioner of the Indiana Boxing Commission, forwarded me this promising email distributed to members of the ABC. Joel Campuzano is Supervisor of the Illinois Department of Regulation, which oversees boxing in the state of Illinois. With all the controversy in boxing, it's refreshing to hear the other side of the proverbial coin. I laud their efforts to unify the regulation of boxing on an international basis. Bravo!]

Dear Members,

On Monday and Tuesday of this week Joel Campuzano and I traveled to Mexico City to meet with Jose Manzur, President of the FEDCOMBOX. FEDCOMBOX is an association of Mexican Boxing Commissions. In Mexico there are over 150 State and City Boxing Commissions.

Also present at the meeting were 8 representatives of boxing commission from various regions on Mexico which encompassed the entire Country. The FECOMBOX is trying to organize all the commissions in Mexico. They are in the process of developing a contact persons for all commissions and providing that information to our membership. The FEDCOMBOX is launching a website, www.fedcombox.com.mx

The goal of the meeting was to develop a better working relationship between United States/Canadian and the FEDCOMBOX Member Boxing Commissions. We both discussed the we have very common problems in boxing and by working together, we will be able to improve the regulation of boxing in our countries.

The FEDCOMBOX beginning on January 1, 2009, will begin to issue picture identification card with a specific ID number for each boxer. I will provide a sample copy of this card in a later email. The FEDCOMBOX is also implementing a Authorization Permit which each boxer who coming from Mexico must have in their possession to participate in the United States and Canada. This document will verify the boxer and several very important pieces of information about the boxer. Part of this document is to be completed by Commission after the fight and returned with the boxer back to Mexico. I will provide a copy of this document with instructions at a later date. This document will allow both the FEDCOMBOX and the US/Canadian Commissions to better track boxers. This system will only work if our member commissions require the document from the Mexican Boxing before participation.

The FEDCOMBOX has also agreed to implement a standardized boxing result form for each commission to use to submit results. The FEDCOMBOX has assured me that all boxing results with ID numbers for boxers as well as suspension information will be submitted to FIGHT FAX at the conclusion of each bout. The FEDCOMBOX Commissions that can afford to purchase records from FIGHT FAX will do so, but at a minimum, the suspension list will be checked by each commission.

The FEDCOMBOX has asked that our members support their medical suspension as well as administrative suspension when possible. I requested the same of the FEDCOMBOX for suspensions levied in the US and Canada.

I will provide more information in the coming weeks, however, to better our relationships with the FEDCOMBOX, we must make a commitment to work together for the betterment of all boxing.

If you need to contact a specific boxing commission in Mexico or need specific information about a boxer from Mexico, we will direct all those inquires through Mr. Manzur who will in turn contact the correct Mexican Boxing Commission to find the information needed.

Lastly, I want you to know the FEDCOMBOX group the Joel and I met with are very much like us, they are professional people, doctors, lawyers, engineers etc, that care about the regulation of boxing. None of the group receives any compensation for their work with their boxing commission, they do it for the love of the sport. They are extremely excited to being this new venture just as I am.

Sincerely,

Tim Lueckenhoff
President
