Boxer's Cutman Vickki Marconi Just Had Chemo for Breast Cancer
'I'm a Fighter, but Vickki is the Real Warrior,' says Boxer Frankie Zepeda
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., October 12, 2007 - On October 19th, when Shelbyville's Francisco "Panchito" Zepeda steps into the boxing ring, he won't be the toughest fighter in the room. "My cutman, Viccki Marconi, just knocked out breast cancer," Zepeda said. "I'm a fighter, but she is the real warrior."
"Not only is Vickki the best cutman I've ever worked with, her battle with cancer inspires me every time I train," Zepeda continued. "I was really happy to hear that my fight on October 19th would benefit breast cancer research." Marconi recently finished 13-months of chemo and her prognosis is excellent.
Zepeda (16-5, 9 KOs), an Indy fight fan favorite, returns in "The Circle City Rumble" in the Hall of Champions at the Adam's Mark Hotel in a light welterweight bout against an opponent to be announced shortly. Born in Cocula, Mexico, Zepeda moved to the US at the age of 12. He and his wife have two children.
Zepeda, Vickki and her husband Ray Marconi, Frankie's manager, have been a team, perhaps more of a family, for more than five years now. Viccki, perhaps the only female "cutman" in boxing, learned her craft from the best, the legendary Chuck Bodak. A native of Gary now living in California, Bodak has worked the corners of boxing's greatest including Oscar de La Hoya, Julio Cesar Chavez and Muhammad Ali.
In addition to her 10 years experience as a cutman, Viccki is a boxing instructor in Indy, and the branch manager of Fairway Independent Mortgage.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In it's honor, the promoter of the Circle City Rumble had already put plans into place to donate to Komen's PassionatelyPink.com. "And then I learned about Vickki's victory," said the CEO of One In A Million Inc., Octavius James.
"For every woman diagnosed with breast cancer, the effect is felt by a husband, father, brother or son," James said. "One In A Million is making a donation to Komen's Passionately Pink campaign. In the evening's main event, Gary native, "Merciless" Mary McGee (11-0, 6 KOs) faces Tawnyah Freeman (8-4, 3 KOs) for the NABC women's lightweight title. The Circle City Rumble features seven professional bouts including another Indy fight fan favorite, "Downtown" Louis Brown (15-3, 10 KOs).
