Carroll was clever, agile and scientific; He was a manager of Bob Fitzsimmons and the trainer/backer of Johnny Griffin; He utilized the "heart punch" during his bouts and he taught George LaBlanche the "pivot punch" that was used against "Nonpareil" Jack Dempsey

During his career, Jimmy defeated such men as Andy Bowen, Sam Blakelock, Tommy McManus and Mike Scully
